There were some fun shots to take today...
I've seen a few of these heliostats on my travels.
Good way to generate power from the sun.
This is from their website...
The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is a concentrating solar power (CSP) plant built near Tonopah in Nye County, Nevada, US. The 110MW plant is the first commercial-grade solar power plant in the US to be fully integrated with energy storage technology. It is also the world’s largest solar power facility with storage. The estimated cost of the project is $1bn.
The Tonopah solar power plant uses advanced molten salt storage system that is capable
of storing up to ten hours of solar energy.
The CSP technology makes use of heliostat mirrors that reflect the solar radiation to heat molten salts passing through a series of tubes installed on the central receiver tower. The molten salt is then transferred to a large insulated tank for storage.
The hot molten salt from the insulated tank is passed through a series of heat
The hot molten salt from the insulated tank is passed through a series of heat
exchangers to produce highly pressurized super-heated steam.
The steam is used to run a conventional turbine to generate electricity.
Surplus thermal energy is stored in the molten salt and can be utilized to
produce additional power for up to ten hours.
Mines can be spotted all around.
This is the artillery depot.
It's kind of mind boggling just how big it is.
Hawthorne Army Depot (HWAD) is a U.S. Army ammunition storage depot located near the town of Hawthorne in western Nevada in the United States. It is directly south of Walker Lake. The depot covers 147,000 acres or 226 sq. mi. and has 600,000 square feet storage space in 2,427 bunkers. HWAD is the "World's Largest Depot" and is divided into three ammunition storage and production areas, plus an industrial area housing command headquarters, facilities engineering shops, etc
Captured this on my phone's maps as we went by.
Each of those little dots are ammo storage buildings.
They look like this for the most part.
This was also in Hawthorn, NV.
The spinning windmills are made out of the old back ends of bombs!!!
Funniest thing about this shot was that it was close to the town of Green Acres, I kid you not!
Who couldn't love a cactus water tank?
OK, just out of Carson City is a little area called the Bunny Ranch, brothel and all.
Just have to scratch your head on the names that DIDN'T make the cut.
One of the first good views of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
Saw it snowing like crazy all over it later in the day.
You know you're in Nevada when....
There are slot machines in the local grocery store.
Ummmm, just saying :-)
